چکیده

BACKGROUND The serum level of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) depends on the tumor size and differentiation grade. Jaundice can cause an elevation of serum CA 19-9, although the nature of this interaction is not fully understood. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a retrospective study of 26 patients with potentially resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Serum CA 19-9 was correlated with the histological differentiation. CA 19-9 adjusted for serum bilirubin was determined and analyzed. RESULTS No correlation between CA 19-9 and histological differentiation was determined (p>0.05). The median adjusted CA 19-9 level was significantly lower (p=0.01) in patients with normal biliary excretion than those with bilirubin levels >2 mg/dL. CONCLUSION These data are consonant with the theory of a dual contribution to the serum CA 19-9 level from biliary obstruction and tumor cell synthesis.

High Expression of P38α and Preoperative Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 Indicate Poor Prognosis in Patients with Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

Background: P38α is a ubiquitous protein kinase, which plays diverse roles in cancers. Surprisingly, P38α functions vary markedly in different cancers (e.g., cancer suppressor vs cancer promoter). However, there is no report on the expression of P38α, the family's most important member, in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and its association with clinicoathological parameters and patient...

Serum CA 19-9 and CEA Levels as a Prognostic Factor in Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma

PURPOSE To investigate the use of pretreatment carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as prognostic factors to determine survival in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma and received surgery, chemoradiotherapy or chemotherapy was performed. Factors...

Gastric Cancer with a Very High Serum CA 19-9 Level

Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a sensitive marker for pancreatic and hepatobiliary malignancies. The highest frequency of elevated serum CA 19-9 levels is found among patients with pancreatic cancer. CA 19-9 has recently been demonstrated to be a marker of digestive tract malignancies. We report the case of a patient with a gastric cancer and a very high serum CA 19-9 level. During lapa...

Factors affecting long-term survival after surgical resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

PURPOSE Some patients who undergo surgical resection of pancreatic cancer survive longer than other patients. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that affect long-term survival after resection of histopathologically confirmed pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. METHODS A single-center, retrospective study was conducted among 164 patients who underwent surgical resection of pan...

Expression and Diagnostic Value of HE4 in Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma

Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) is a recognized biomarker in ovarian and endometrial cancer and over-expressed in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The diagnostic value of HE4 in pancreatic adenocarcinoma remains unknown. Here we elucidate mRNA, protein and serum level of HE4 in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. HE4 mRNA level in tumor adjacent tissues and pancreatic adenocarcinoma tissues were tested by re...
